01/10/07 Strauss-Kahn to head IMF: Priority to be given to helping poor countries and to correct the global imbalances.
The Chairman of the EPP-ED Group in the European Parliament, Joseph Daul MEP, welcomed today the designation Dominique Strauss-Kahn to head the International Monetary Fund (IMF) as new Director General.
Joseph Daul also congratulated outgoing Director General Rodrigo de Rato for his courageous performance and engagement. Daul had met the Spanish Director General during his visit to Washington last July and had discussed with him the current relations between the European Union and the IMF. "Rodrigo de Rato has initiated the reform of the IMF and has started to implement the adaptations necessary in view of the changes brought by globalisation", underlined Daul.
"The IMF is confronted with major challenges", said the Chairman of the European Parliament's largest and most influential political group. "It is necessary to get to work helping the poorest countries in the world and developing multilateral consultation processes in order to correct the global imbalances. I am convinced that the new Director General will be up to demanding task", concluded Joseph Daul.
