22/01/08 An efficient Europe to ensure a strong development of our regions and local entities

07-10-12daul.jpgSpeaking at a seminar for Bulgarian elected officials and other representatives of local authorities today in Burgas, Bulgaria, Joseph Daul MEP, Chairman of the EPP-ED Group in the European Parliament, pleaded for an efficient European Union, able to deliver results and answers to the problems which local entities both in Bulgaria and in the rest of Europe are facing:

"I am particularly pleased to be given this opportunity to discuss with you the challenges ahead of us. These are in particular globalisation, energy dependence, climate change, the cost of living and inflation. As Mayors and representatives of local authorities, you know better than anyone that these are not empty words but hard realities which you are experiencing every day. We will not succeed in finding adequate answers to these problems unless we search for them together. The solutions we need can only come from uniting our efforts at three levels: European, national and local", said the Chairman of the largest and most influential group in the European Parliament.

Mr Daul also commented on the priorities of the EPP-ED Group which will aim at reinforcing a European Union at the service of its citizens:

"We defend four main priorities: a Europe safeguarding fundamental and humanistic values and pursuing a solid transatlantic relationship while deepening our neighbourhood and enlargement policies; a Europe which prospers thanks to the achievement of a functioning, transparent Single Market and the fulfilment of the Lisbon Agenda; a more secure Europe where the combat against international terrorism is intensified and where a coherent, common energy policy safeguards energy supplies and the fight against climate change; and finally, a Europe focusing more on the solidarity between its Member States, especially when it comes to cohesion policy and the defence of Europe's social model."

In his speech, Mr Daul also acclaimed the excellent work of the Bulgarian Members of the EPP-ED Group under the leadership of Rumiana Jeleva MEP.
