15/07/2009 Natalya Estemirova's murder regretted and condemned
The EPP Group in the European Parliament has learned with regret of the murder of Natalya Estemirova. Joseph Daul MEP, Chairman of the EPP Group, condemned those responsible for this terrible act:
"We learned with great sorrow that Natalya Estemirova, the 2005 Schuman Medal laureate, was abducted, together with Russian dissident Sergei Kovalev, this morning outside her home in Grozny (Chechnya). She was later found dead in neighbouring Ingushetia.
Natalya Estemirova was a great human rights defender in Chechnya. She played an active part in the struggle for peace in her country and for reconciliation between Chechnyans and Russians.
The last public statement she made was yesterday, pointing out the high number of disappearances/kidnappings since the end of Chechnya's status as a zone of so-called counter-terrorist operations in April. Natalya was a widow. She leaves behind a 15-year old daughter.
In the name of the EPP Group, I call upon the competent authorities to investigate this abduction and killing and to bring those responsible to trial."
