03/03/2010: Strong European governance and support for SMEs for a successful 2020 Strategy
"We need a strong and transparent governance structure that respects the subsidiarity principle. The Lisbon Strategy was not successful due to weak governance structure and lack of accountability of the Member States. This should not happen again", commented the Chairman of the EPP Group in the European Parliament, Joseph Daul MEP, on today's presentation of the Europe 2020 Strategy Paper by the European Commission.
The European 2020 Strategy is designed to put the EU back on track to growth and job creation, by turning the EU into a smart, sustainable social market economy, with a high rate of employment, productivity and social cohesion. Joseph Daul said this can be achieved only if the objectives and strategies are properly coordinated and supported by targeted government action.
Corien Wortmann-Kool MEP, Vice-Chairwoman of the EPP Group responsible for the Working Group Economy and Environment, underlined that SMEs are the motor of our current economy and creator of jobs, playing a crucial role in reinvigorating economic growth: "They will foster the creativity and innovation which underpins economic strength and technological progress. The European Commission should give more priority to the completion of the internal market and to cutting red tape for the SMEs in order to reduce their administrative burden."
Fostering a sustainable economy, support for SMEs, and a strict commitment to the Growth and Stability Pact are key priorities for the EPP Group. "We ask the Commission to propose initiatives to tackle the weaknesses in the EMU", said Wortmann-Kool. "We should be strictly committed to the Growth and Stability Pact and reforming public spending. We must further develop the EU 2020 Strategy, within the scope of the Lisbon Treaty, with concrete goals and real commitment by Member States", concluded Wortmann-Kool.
