18/04/2011: Finnish elections: congratulations to Jyrki Katainen on National Coalition Party's historic election result
"I wish to extend my warmest congratulations to Jyrki Katainen, Chairman of the National Coalition Party in Finland, on its historic result in yesterday's general elections. It is the first time the National Coalition Party is the largest party in the Finnish Parliament by number of seats.
This is a remarkable result and shows that Finns trust Mr Katainen and his party, who have been conducting responsible policies in difficult times," said Joseph Daul, Chairman of the most influential political force in the European Parliament.
"We are now looking forward to the nomination of Jyrki Katainen as formateur of the new government and, soon thereafter, as the 16th EPP Prime Minister in the European Council. It has been a pleasure for me to work with Mr Katainen, Vice-President of the European People's Party, over the years, and I'm pleased to see his European role reinforced," Mr Daul stated.
"I'm aware that many citizens in Finland wanted to have their voices heard by voting for the populist True Finns party. However, it is the responsible policies of the National Coalition Party that gained the most support. Therefore I'm confident that Mr Katainen will show leadership in negotiating a governmental programme that both guarantees national unity and continues Finland's proactive and highly-regarded work in shaping the European Union," concluded Mr Daul.
Chairman Daul also sent his congratulations to Alexander Stubb, former Member of the EPP Group, who gained more than 41 000 personal votes in the Finnish elections.
