19/10/2011 Valdis Dombrovskis re-nominated as Latvian Prime Minister
Valdis Dombrovskis has been re-nominated as Prime Minister of Latvia by Latvian President Andris Bērziņš. Valdis Dombrovskis will form a new government in Latvia following the extraordinary elections to the Latvian Parliament (Saeima) last month.
The Chairman of the EPP Group, the largest parliamentary group in the European Parliament, Joseph Daul MEP, has congratulated Valdis Dombrovskis on his third appointment to the Prime Ministerial post.
"Since the appointment of Prime Minister Valdis Dombrovskis, a former MEP and Member of the EPP Group, Latvia has shown that it can adapt to new economic realities and prepare the return to growth."
"Valdis Dombrovskis deserves true praise and admiration at European level as he has managed to introduce the necessary reforms and earn Latvian citizens' support all over again. I believe experts should keep analysing the phenomenon of Valdis Dombrovskis and how to gain the trust and support of citizens while making unpopular and complicated decisions", said Joseph Daul.
Valdis Dombrovskis and his team will now begin consultations on the formation of a cabinet with the political partners. According to the Constitution, the new government will be subject to a vote of confidence by the Saeima as soon as it is formed.
Valdis Dombrovskis has been Prime Minister of Latvia since March 2009.
