19/10/2011 Cypriot Naval Base Tragedy: EPP Group honours victims and their families Addressing his profound condolences, sympathy and prayers to the families of the victims of the tragic accident at the naval base in Mari, Cyprus, Joseph Daul MEP, Chairman of the EPP Group, said that the images of devastation and despair of 11 July 2011 have shocked not only the people of Cyprus but also all Europeans. "Their sacrifice is exemplary and I hope that the ideals of your loved ones will guide you and give you the courage to move on with your lives", said Joseph Daul at a ceremony organised today in the European Parliament by Ioannis Kasoulides MEP and Eleni Theocharous MEP honouring the bravery of the 13 men who lost their lives in the line of duty and in an effort to save others. "Their sense of duty, self-sacrifice, solidarity and altruism are values that transcend the Mediterranean borders of Cyprus, as they are universal and, above all, European values. It is for this reason their memory is being honoured in the European Parliament", said Mr Kasoulides and Ms Theocharous in their address to the families of the victims. The families of the victims were honoured with commemorative plaques during the ceremony which was held under the auspices of the European Commissioner for International Cooperation, Humanitarian Aid and Crisis Response, Kristalina Georgieva.
