10/07/2012 Romania: we call on the Government to respect the rulings of the Constitutional Court
The Chairman of the EPP Group remains very concerned about the latest political developments in Romania threatening the rule of law. Joseph Daul stated:
"I am very worried about what is still happening in Romania. The Government has its own interpretation of what the Constitutional Court has recently ruled. For my Group, laws and rulings by the Constitutional Court are created to be respected, not changed or ignored when they do not serve the interest of the Prime Minister and his government.
I call again for a debate in the European Parliament on this matter. I invite the Romanian Prime Minister to come and explain to the entire Parliament how he has changed so many laws and rulings within one week and what the aim of all these changes is. Meanwhile, I call again on the Commission to scrutinise and assess all these matters and to draw up a report in the coming weeks.
I was asked to have a meeting tomorrow with the Romanian Prime Minister. I refuse to meet him until he makes clear that his government will put into practice what the Constitutional Court has recently ruled, withdraws the emergency ordinances that are not complying with the Constitutional Court decisions and he shows that he fully respects the rule of law."
