17/07/2012 Syria: Russia should withdraw its veto in the UN

120206_syria_region.jpgThe EPP Group denounces in the strongest possible way the heavy fighting around the Syrian capital Damascus over the last days as well as the massacre in the village of Tremseh in the Hama region on Friday.

The EPP Group Chairman, Joseph Daul MEP, condemned the new atrocities in Syria: "We strongly condemn the new massacre in Syria. Russia should withdraw its veto in the UN and join the international community in seeking a solution."

Speaking on the same issue, Ioannis Kasoulides MEP, EPP Group Vice-Chairman responsible for Foreign Affairs, said: "The reports from the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) indicate that fighting in Syria is so widespread that the conflict is now in effect a civil war. It should become clear that all perpetrators for crimes in violation of the Geneva Conventions will be answerable to the International Criminal prosecution."
