07/11/2008 Economic Crisis: Europe sets the pace at reforms

07-03-14-euro.jpgThe Chairman of the EPP-ED Group (centre-right) in the European Parliament, Joseph Daul MEP, has welcomed the clear political will expressed by the 27 Heads of State and Government assembled at today's extraordinary meeting in Brussels, to coordinate their economic policies in order to better respond to the challenges of the economic crisis and the recession.

Sharing the concern of all EU Member States of the gravity of the current situation, Joseph Daul also welcomed that a united Europe will now take coordinated measures to maximally reduce the impact of the financial crisis on the real economy.

The EPP-ED Group, as the strongest political force in the European Parliament, will work in close cooperation with the European Commission on the economic strategy which the European Council has requested the Commission to elaborate.

"All political European actors, Parliament, Council and Commission, have to mobilise to defend a common European position in view of this crisis and to encourage our partners to act with the same degree of determination", underlined Joseph Daul.

"There is an urgent need to act now and our political Group supports the call of the 27 Member States for a deadline of 100 days during which the measures of applying the principles of the reform of the system have to be adopted and implemented, especially in regard to the question of transparency and better regulation of the financial markets. Europe intends to defend these measures together at the upcoming G20 summit in Washington."

"It is in such moments of crisis that our citizens can measure best the importance of a united and determined Europe, which sets the pace of the reforms needed at a global level", concluded Joseph Daul.
